For over 30-years Derek has been a mechanic, cycling enthusiast, and former shop owner. Derek started his professional career in bicycle mechanics as Race Mechanic for the US National Mountain Bike Team, this experience in mechanics in a fast paced environment grew his knowledge and skill exponentially. His passion while teaching at The Barnett Bicycle Institute, brought a new generation of successful bicycle mechanics to the world, through proper education on mechanics and safety. This drive to bring knowledge and skill to the cycling community grew as he founded his own bicycle shop in Leadville, Colorado. The Bicycle haven was a hub for the cycling community in a town well known for the Leadville 100, Winter & Summer race series, and world class road and mountain cycling. Derek has a passion for cycling that has inspired cyclists, built mechanics, grown communities, and sparked new-found interests in not just cycling but mechanics abound.

Today Derek is looking to use his experience in different areas of the bicycle industry in a technical capacity to instruct others in the proper repair and maintenance of their machines, ensuring as many bikes as possible not only work well but are fun to ride.
